Today is the 162nd birthday of our namesake, Helen Stewart, and our magazine wanted to take a moment and express gratitude to her and the Stewart family for their role in shaping Las Vegas, the city that serves as a home to the majority of our staff members.
We had an amazing turnout for our first event at the Old Mormon Fort Las Vegas Historic State Park. Many of the local poets from our Spring Issue (also released today) read their work as well as the winners of the first annual Helen Stewart Poetry Award.
Each of the winners received an official certificate for their award plus a check from Helen: A Literary Magazine.
The Friends of the Fort did a fantastic job of organizing the event including arranging the performance of the Nevada Old Time Fiddlers and a birthday cake as part of the festivities.
We’re looking forward to next year’s contest and poetry reading!
