Helen Presents: a poem by Kristin Stoner

I imagine your dreams
white
cold
and open
swift as your fluttering heart
where you are one
of many
where as sure as the moon behind the snow
you are sure of your place in that wild

where you move wild
your course back thick with freezing
the snow a dusting of ghosts behind you

when you wake
raise your velvet ears
perhaps you still smell your bloody breath on the air
still hear the rush of feet

in your eyes, I think, a flicker of sadness

Kristin Stoner teaches in the English department at Iowa State University. Some of her publications include Natural Bridge and Review Americana. She lives in Des Moines, Iowa with her patient husband and crazy dog.
