FNS: The Dogs of Elko by Ron Riekki

Every Friday night we feature a short story, essay, personal narrative,
poem, spoken word, or short film for your enjoyment.

Tonight’s poem is from Ron Riekki

for José, point guard

We play reservation basketball
in thick

the desert all ratty and young
with a full moon

waiting for us to get tired
for crying
out loud,

but there is no exhaustion
when you’re angry-bored,
able to ignore
the suicide

of a gazelle until he comes back
to haunt us

in our wide-awake

Riekki’s books include U.P.: a novel, The Way North: Collected Upper Peninsula New Works (2014 Michigan Notable Book), and Here: Women Writing on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. His play “Carol” was in The Best Ten-Minute Plays 2012, The First Real Halloween was best sci-fi/fantasy screenplay for the 2014 International Family Film Festival, and his story “The Family Jewel” was selected for The Best Small Fictions 2015. His poem “A Thousand Crows” was published in Helen’s Animal Issue.
